School Elections
Bundung Ka Kunda, 1992

Almost every school in the country from primary to high school has a "head boy" and "head girl". The head students assist the school administration in various ways, such as running the school assembly. Head students also have certain priviledges and responsibilities that other students don't have.

In some schools the head boy and girl are appointed by the headmaster or principal. At other schools the head boy and girl are elected by their fellow classmates. School elections can be quite lively and competitive. At this school, each candidate was allowed to choose one of his or her supporters to make a 3 minute speech to the student body extolling the virtues of their candidate. The candidates' supporters also carried or wore signs with such slogans as "Seedy: The People's Choice", "The Rightful Seedy," or "Seedy is OK". Depending on the school, elections can be taken quite seriously by the students despite the fact that the position is basically honorary and doesn't carry much real power.
