Fatoto Ferry
Fatoto, 1993

This ferry crosses the river at Fatoto, one of the farthest-inland villages in The Gambia. As you can see in the picture, this is an unmotorized ferry, meaning the passengers must help pull the ferry across the river by pulling on the the cable which is strung across the river. The ferry can hold vehicles as well as people. It's a good system, and once the ferry gets going isn't too hard to pull the cable, although you get your hands wet and you should avoid sliding your hand along the cable in case there is a burr or something slimy sticking to it. Usually only the men do the pulling.
