Coos-Coos
Kanifing, 1994

Coos-coos, or millet, is one of the main crops in The Gambia, along with rice, groundnuts (peanuts), corn, and cotton. Unlike groundnuts, coos is mostly grown for domestic consumption.

In this picture coos can be seen growing under some power lines near Bakau which is in the heart of the urban area. This serves to illustrate that very little land is left idle in towns and villages. Even small patches by the side of the road will frequently have crops growing in them, as there is always someone who is willing to work to earn a little extra for the family.
